Many people are asking the same question, “How can I make money from WordPress?” and “Why are people moving to WordPress as the preferred platform for their web publishing”. The answer is straightforward and simple, but the processes that are needed are highly technical and complicated.

Because of WordPress’ expanded and customizable capabilities through its plugin system, a lot of people have made it possible to make money from WordPress with just a few clicks. Here are some of the ways to profit from this blog platform:

1. Services
People who find the need for a specific type of plugin, create the opportunity for those who make them. If you can make a certain kind of plugin, that a webmaster needs, then you might as well put up a Business is Open sign. The demand for such plugins is steadily increasing as web masters and developers need to concentrate on promoting their websites.

One very good example of a plugin that is in high demand are the many incarnations of SEO plugins. SEO, makes it easy for publishers to get their content out in the web and in the sights of Google and other search engines. By creating a plugin like that, both you and the publisher can easily make money from WordPress.

2. Software
WordPress is a rather intriguing blog platform in that it can perform a host of various functions aside from the traditional model of blog publishing.

There are many companies that sell web based software based on WP as a Content Management System. These are very important for media companies who want to have an expansive web presence. Usually, rather than use the traditional model of boxed software, these companies focus instead on providing subscriptions that are paid on a monthly or annual basis.

3. Content
Of course, we should not downgrade the capability of WP to perform the traditional role of blog publisher. It is very good at it and more and more people are migrating from Blogger to WordPress.

One very good example by which people can make money from WordPress is through advertising. The notable blog Problogger.net utilizes all means to make this possible in many diverse ways. It even has its own job board where interested advertisers can look for bloggers who wish to earn money through writing. An advertisement usually costs about $50 USD a month.

4. Traffic
High amounts of traffic is monetizable through many other advertising platforms. The most famous of these is Google’s Adsense program. The program is straightforward and very simple. As a publisher, you earn a share of advertising revenue whenever a person clicks on an advertisement that is hosted on your WordPress blog.

A similar program you can use to make money from WordPress is called Chitika.

5. Affiliate Marketing
One of my favorite ways to make money from WordPress is through affiliate marketing. This is very similar to earning through traffic but the potential earnings are noticeably higher given that commissions are given whenever a lead, a click or a sale is generated.

This is also more flexible when compared to traffic based revenue because you can opt in and choose specific products that you want to endorse via your WP site.

6. Templates
People with a flair for graphics design can also opt to earn money by designing templates or themes. Unique and original themes are in high demand specifically due to the nature of blogs which is supposed to show your unique perspective on things.

There are numerous WordPress SEO plugins available but some are for people who want to get into the finer points of on page SEO. Which should the average non SEO expert user install, if any?

Firstly I would say that any installation of WordPress will benefit by the installation of a minimum of two WordPress SEO plugins.

Site Map Plugin

It is essential that all the pages and posts on a site are indexed by the search engines and any new content is picked up quickly. This can be helped considerably by using a plugin such as “Google XML Sitemaps” to create and maintain a site map for the search engines (not just Google despite the name).

General SEO Plugin

The most well known of the WordPress SEO Plugins is probably “All In One SEO Pack”. This has a number of functions to improve SEO and if you don’t want to get into the detail you can simply leave the default settings. If you go that route all you have to do is enter the meta data for the Home Page (the title and description that appear on the search engine results) and it is ready to go.

There are other general WordPress SEO plugins which have more functionality and if you are prepared to get to grips with this, it may be better to go for something like the “Platinum SEO Plugin” at the outset.

Other WordPress SEO Plugins

There are many more WordPress SEO plugins which can be installed and provided you take time to understand what they do, they can be beneficial but they are not essential. Examples include:

* Shorten URLs
* Control of Title Tags
* Make images SEO friendly
* Manage Redirections
* Manage 404 errors
* Automatic link generation
* No Follow external links
* Easy social bookmarking (for visitors)
* Control paging of comments.

On Page SEO

The most important aspect of SEO for any site is to ensure that the relevancy of the content is 100% clear to the search engines. If this is not done it will be much harder to get a good ranking in the search results. If on page SEO is poor it will be almost impossible to get a good ranking, however many backlinks you get, simply because the search engines don’t understand which search queries it is relevant to.

What is WordPress?

The technical definition of WordPress is an open source CMS. CMS stands for Content Management System. Basically, it cuts out a lot of technical work and allows you to start uploading your content with a few easy clicks. According to some statistics, it is used to support 12% of the estimated 1,000,000 biggest websites. It is used most popularly to publish blog websites.

Why use WordPress?

In a word simplicity. You don’t have to know how to write code to publish decent websites using WordPress. Although, some knowledge of how websites get on the web is useful and will let you manipulate the facilities available with WordPress more easily.

What do you need to get started?

You will need a domain name. This is the name of your website. Domain name’s can be bought for around $10. A popular site to buy domains is GoDaddy.com. You will need a hosting account. This is an account that lets you use a little piece of the web where you can keep your website. Very often you can buy and register your domain name in the same place as your hosting account.

Next you will need to upload WordPress onto your domain name. You can do this manually using an FTP program. An FTP program is a piece of software that acts as an interface between the world wide web and your own computer files. It allows you to transfer files you have stored in your computer, to files that are stored with your server host out there in webspace. If you are a beginner this can either be an enlightening experience or a frustrating obstacle. However, learning to use an FTP program is a great bonus as it allows you greater access to your website files. There a many good FTP programs you can download for free such as Filezilla and CoffeeCup. However, a more straightforward way to upload WordPress is to do it automatically. Most host accounts will have a facility that allows you to upload WordPress onto your website with a couple of clicks of the mouse. Fantastico is one such program as a good example.

How do I upload content to my website?

Once you have uploaded WordPress onto your website you can type in your website address and see your website up and running. Initially, what you will see is a generic WordPress website, it needs you to add content; to do this you need to go to your back office, this is where you upload content. You can get there by simply adding /wp-admin to the end of your website’s address. You will then be taken to a login page. WordPress will send you a complicated password to the e-mail address you registered with your host account. You can change this to something more memorable. The default password will be ‘admin’ again you can change this.

Now, inside the back office, you can start to upload content. From here it is fairly straightforward; to change the title from the default ‘My Blog’ simply click on ‘Settings’ and then ‘General’ to be taken to a page where you can change the title. To add a ‘Post’, click on ‘Post’ and ‘Add New’ and type in the title and the text that you want to appear on your website, then, click ‘Publish’. Posts are either written using WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) or, by clicking on the HTML tag, you can insert code, for example you may wish to embed a YouTube video. You can do this by finding the embed code under the video and then copy and pasting it into your post. It really is very user friendly.

What’s all the other stuff in the WordPress Menu?

A very important thing to understand are Themes. This is the name given to the files that make the appearance of your website. When you upload WordPress it puts a default theme on your website. You can change this by uploading a different theme. WordPress provides a facility for choosing a range of different themes. Click on ‘Appearance’ then ‘Themes’ click on ‘Install Themes’. From here you need choose your style and search for a theme you like and then follow the simple installation process. Alternatively you can search on the net for the thousands of themes you can download. Some are free, some you will need to buy. There are some very sophisticated designs that you can buy. If you go this route you download the theme to your computer and then upload it to your website via an FTP program installing the file into the WordPress themes file (click through to it via wp-content).

Another important facility that needs to be understood are plugins. Plugins are software applications you can download onto your website. They can perform a myriad of functions for example they can filter spam, help build links e.g to social sites, add forms, send out Tweets and all sorts. Again WordPress allows you to search and install these plugins.

And the other stuff? Click it and see. A little playing around will soon let you understand what’s what. Plus there is a ton of help that WordPress provides, just visit their site. If you are new to website building you will be surprised how quickly you can get great looking results.

When starting out with your online business you probably want to set it up as cheaply as possible, and this includes the setting up of your website too. WordPress is often the platform of choice for those just starting out online, without the budget to hire someone to create a website for them, it offers the cheapest and most versatile option.

Setting up your first website in WordPress is a great idea for so many reasons. If you are unsure about which business you want to go into, setting up a WordPress site, whether it’s hosted or self-hosted, is a cheap way of making a mistake if you decide to change your mind and do something else, so there is little or no risk. You can get some WordPress experience through trial and error for very little cost that you can take with you to your next website or just perfect the website you already have.

For those with a very limited budget is can seem that hosting your website at WordPress.com is the best option, as there is no cash outlay, no real technical skills are required and being hosted on the WordPress site you would presume it would be very secure so no likelihood of anyone hacking into your website. However, there are some limitations with this method and to understand what they are you need to look further down the life of both your business and your website.

Although there are hundreds of free and paid Wordpress templates available, you may want more flexibility on how that template looks. You may want to change the color scheme or change an image and customize the WordPress template more to your liking and for this you need access to the templates css (cascading style sheets) files. This is a paid upgrade option for those websites hosted at WordPress.com.

Many WordPress templates will come with a variety of options so that you can edit the template very easily from your WordPress dashboard. Just look out for these within the “add new template” option on your dashboard. To edit an image or a header and that option doesn’t appear in within the template dashboard, you need access to the images located in the hosting file, which you do not have access to. So just be aware of this.

Another thing you need to take into consideration is both your technical knowledge as well as the software you have available to actually edit your images. If you don’t have technical knowledge nor editing software then you should look for templates that you won’t want to edit in any way. This goes for self hosted WordPress websites too.

Also, if you want to offer free reports or audios to the visitors of your website, you will be unable to upload them to your WordPress site as you don’t have hosting access. Depending on how you see your website developing this may or may not affect your decision on choosing a WordPress hosted website or not.

If you want to just get used to WordPress and try different things out then by all means register your chosen website at WordPress.com. Please note that your URL, or web address, will be a subdomain of WordPress, for example mychosensite.wordpress.com and it doesn’t really give a professional image to your business, however it will make you more confident using your WordPress website. You can always buy a domain and forward it to your WordPress.com website if you decide to keep this as your main website.

First and foremost old sayings must be remembered. One that is the truest on the internet is “you get what you pay for”. There are numerous free AdSense themes for WordPress out on the net, but there is a reason they are free. The most counted reason is that no one will pay for them. Another good reason they are free is they are already outdated. The internet is a constantly expanded entity. Because of this a website must not only be current but stay current. Once something becomes free, its idea or mechanism is already exploited in market place to saturation levels and something new has come along.

Sometimes a new idea is so unique that it can last the test of time. This is what you are looking for in your AdSense theme for WordPress. Once set your site will be remembered by the consumer for years to come.

The best AdSense theme for WordPress comes with a support package that will attract the web surfing consumer to your site. This will include automatic posting of your other blog titles in an easy to find and read format. Highly visible CTR AdSense located on every page of your website. Editing and placing your ads should also be easy and straight forward. Color coordination to make the ads stand out but not glare at the prospective client.

WordPress is an excellent platform to use if you want to run your own blog because it’s structure and design enables it to get very good results in the search engines. However it can still be improved further, so here’s 5 simple WordPress SEO tips:

WordPress is an excellent platform to use if you want to run your own blog because it’s structure and design enables it to get very good results in the search engines. However it can still be improved further, so here’s 5 simple WordPress SEO tips:

1. Create keyword rich post titles.

It’s important to note that you don’t just want to write posts for your regular readers because you want to attract many new readers as well. So to do this you want to write post titles that contain the keywords relating to the content that you have just written.

2. Create a strong permalink structure.

It’s open to debate which permalink structure is the best for SEO purposes, but whichever one you choose you must use one which includes the title of the post within the URL. It’s no good creating keyword rich titles if they don’t actually show up in the URL for that particular post, so this is an absolute must.

3. Install the All-In-One SEO plugin.

There are a few SEO plugins that all do pretty much the same thing but this is the one I personally use. It basically enables you to create fully optimized blog posts. You can list keywords and tags for each post and you can also arrange the title and meta descriptions for every one of your posts. Plus you can also ‘nofollow’ certain pages on your blog so overall it’s a very useful plugin.

4. Install the Google Sitemaps plugin.

This is another plugin that I recommend using for all your WordPress blogs. It basically allows you to automatically submit your pages to Google whenever you create new posts on your blog. So you therefore know that Google will always be indexing your site.

5. Build lots of backlinks.

Finally you should of course create lots of backlinks to your site. This is arguably the most important point because you need lots of backlinks to compete for the more popular keywords. If you can combine both onpage and offpage SEO techniques then you should have a very popular blog on your hands.

It’s wise to start your blog on a good note. It’s difficult to change software and start over again once you have your site going. Blogging for free? When you get something for free, the quality might be lacking and you will likely be forced to have undesirable advertisements on your site that you have no control over.

If it’s within your budget at all, pay someone for website hosting and verify that your server can work with WordPress.

Unless you are a computer wiz, be sure that whichever hosting company you select to host your blog includes Fantastico in the package. WordPress is automatically installed with Fantastico. The other option is to install the software yourself, which is difficult.

WordPress is easy to use and you do not need to be a computer programmer to be able to use it. It works as soon as it is installed, and you can begin blogging right away.

What makes WordPress better than others? It has the most users, it is well established, and it is stable. A wide variety of themes are available. (The appearance and feel of your blog can be altered with themes.) Unless you want to alter a function that cannot be done with ‘canned’ plug-ins, it is unnecessary to have any knowledge of designing or coding.

You have the entire administrative control with your blog. There are so many things that you can do. The user management functions are excellent. For instance, authors can write articles and, upon approval, editors can publish those articles, while administrators can alter the design of the blog — but none will have “permissions” to do or alter the work of others.

Useful functions can be added to your blog when you enable Plug-ins. You have the option of making your own plug-ins with PHP or by selecting a third-party plug-in. Plug-ins can be located on the WordPress website. A plethora of them are available and they can do almost anything you can imagine — there is even one plug-in that will generate an XML sitemap of your site for Google.
